Need help - buying a new computer but what specs?

Question:

I'm going to get one by the end of October but I was wondering what specs should my computer get to achieve best gaming quality. To start off, my budget would be $1500 ~ $2000.

My previous computer had Dual Core (2.7Ghz), 4GB RAM, 320GB Memory and ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series. But I couldn't get to play games like Modern Warfare, Amnesia, Dragon Nest and games like that smoothly. It was running a little slow and laggy. And second, is gaming preferably played on computer or laptop?

Share me your opinions and recommendations. Give as much suggestions as you can. I appreciate your help :)

 Answer:
Do not buy a new computer! If your computer and PSU can support it then just buy the parts and install them yourself. I would suggest you upgrade to 8gb DDR3, 1TB, and a Nvidia GTX 560. If you add these components to your computer, it will run these games perfectly. Make sure your motherboard and PSU can handle the parts before buying them. It's way cheaper than buying a new computer and it is actually better in some perspectives. In the end it should come out to somewhere around to 340 to 440. Much cheaper and your system will rape those games.
